Abstract

ABSTRACT ENI SURYANI, The Effect of Using Brochures as Authentic Text in Teaching Speaking at The Tenth Grade Students of SMA Negeri 1 Kandangan in Academic Year 2015/2016, Thesis, English Department, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, University of Nusantara PGRI Kediri, January, 2016. Speaking is one of important skills in English because the main target of most English learners is students can communicate orally using English. But, people also believe that speaking is difficult because in speaking, the people should not only learn how to use the words but also to speak properly. That is why, for students, it is also difficult to find the idea to be expressed. So, the teacher should make effort to help the students to get the idea easily. One of them is by using media, like authentic text. One of authentic text that can be used in teaching speaking is brochure. According to this statements, the writer would like to have research on the following questions: 1) How is the students’ speaking score before learning using authentic text?, 2) How is the students’ speaking score after learning using authentic text?, and 3) Is there any significant effect of brochure as authentic text to students’ speaking ability? In this research, the writer uses quantitative design and uses test as an instrument to know the students’ speaking ability. There are two kinds of test. They are pre-test that is given in the beginning of the research and post-test that is given in the end of the research. The data obtained are analyzed using statistical formula. In this case, the writer uses t-test. The population of this research is the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Kandangan, while the technique of getting the sample is using one of sampling techniques of probability sampling that is simple random sampling. The sample is only one class, that is X-MIPA 1 which consist of 40 students. Based on the research, it is known that in pre-test 8 students (20%) got score 64, 14 students (35%) got 68, 13 students (32.5%) got 72, 2 students (5%) got 76, and 3 students (7.5%) got 80. Then, for the score of pre-test is more better. There are 6 students (15%) got 72, 12 students (30%) got 76, 12 students (30%) got 80, 5 students (5%) got 84, and 5 students (5%) got 88. Based on this fact, it can be concluded that the students’ speaking was improved because the number of students who got score less than standard score is decrease, and students who passed from standard score is increase. The result obtained in this research shows that there is improvement on the students speaking ability. The t-table for level significance 5% and degree of freedom 39 was 1.684. While the result of t-test is 10.175. it means that t-test is higher than t-table (10.175 > 1.684). So, H0 is rejected and Ha is accepted. It means that using brochures in teaching speaking is an effective way. Finally, suggestion is given to the English teacher, SMA Negeri 1 Kandangan as well as other researchers. should use teaching media in teaching speaking that can help the students to speak in their speaking class. English teacher are suggested to give more attention about how to pronounce word by word for the students. That’s why teacher should repeat and clearly moreover the key words. The next is for the other writers make another similar research. The other writers can analyze other effective interesting teaching technique or media beside brochures to motivate and help the students to speak. Then the last is for the school, SMA Negeri 1 Kandangan, the writer suggest that the school be able to provide an environment that enables the students to learn English. So the students can learn how to speak English well, and the school can create a speaking class of English day for one of their school days.
