Abstract

Abstract Noviatus Sholikhah: The Effectivenessof Semantic Mapping Strategy to the Eighth Grade Students of SMPN 1 Ngadiluwih in the Academic Year 2016/2017.Skripsi, English Department, Teacher Training and Education Faculty, University of Nusantara PGRI Kediri, 2017. Reading reading is very useful way to comprehend the text. In this skill the students are demanded to understand the text as well as possible. But, it is not easy to make the students get information while reading the text. The problems of research were (1) Is semantic mapping strategy effective to eighth grade the students’ reading comprehension of students at SMPN 1 Ngadiluwih in the academic year 2016/2017? (2) How is the students’ response when semantic mapping strategy applied in reading class of eighth grade at SMPN 1 Ngadiluwih in the academic year 2016/2017? This research usedexperimental design and quantitative approach. The research was conducted at SMPN 1 Ngadiluwih Kediri. The subject of this research was Eighth grade students, especially 8J classconsistingof 32 students. The 8J students were given pre-test, post-test and two meetings of treatment to know the effectiveness of Semantic Mapping strategy to students’ reading comprehension. The result of research shows that there is very significant effect of Semantic Mapping strategy to students’ reading comprehension, because t-score is higher than the t-table value either at level of significance of 5% or 1 %. The t-score is 13.524 at the degree of freedom of 31 and the t-table is 2.045 at the level significance 5% and 2.756 at the level significance 1%. Finally,Semantic Mapping strategy proved to be effective to improve students’ reading comprehension. It benefited students to understand the material more easily especially in reading process and students can improve their achievement. The other English teachers should apply this strategy or may use some activities in this strategy to create active teaching learning process.
