Abstract

ABSTRACT TITAH CHASANAH : The Effect of Using Comic Strips on The Students’ Reading Comprehension of Eighth at MTs Al Ikhlash Blabak Academic Year 2015/2016. Skripsi, English Department, Teacher Training and Education Faculty, University of Nusantara PGRI Kediri, 2015. Keywords: Effect, Comic Strips and Reading Comprehension. Reading is one of the English skills that should be mastered by students in junior high school. This skill will give new knowledge or update student’s knowledge when students read written text. In the real class, teacher still applied conventional technique of teaching reading comprehension, teacher only gives students to read the text and answer the question. And the other, teacher always use text translation and ask the students to doing the exercises. It makes them bored in reading subject. The purpose of this research is to find the effect of comic strips on the students’ reading comprehension of eighth grade at MTs Al Ikhlash Blabak academic year 2015/2016. The research design applied in this research is quantitative and the approach of this research is experimental. The sample of this research is the eighth grade students of MTs Al Ikhlash Blabak that consisting 32 students. To get the data, the research was done in four meetings. The data are collected using pre-test and post-test and t-test is applied to analyze the data. The result shows that t-score was 9.17 at the degree of freedom of 32, t-table was 2.042at the level of significance of 5%. So, it means that t-score (9.17) > t-table at the level of significance of 5%. So, the Null Hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and the Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. Based on the result of t-test, it can be concluded that comic strips has significant effect. So there is any effect before the students using comic strips and after the students using comic strips. After the students use comic strips, the students can understand the reading material exactly the meaning of the text, identification of main idea and general information, the students can expressing the meaning of monolog text and also the students have motivation to study the reading material because using this technique the students feel reading is easy and enjoy. Finally, the researcher concludes that comic strips can be used in teaching reading especially reading comprehension because it arouses the students in reading subject and the researcher suggests that the English teacher should be able to select an appropriate media for the students. Comic strips are suitable use in the classroom, it helps students to learn the reading content. So, that the students not feel bored and they can understand the material easily.
