ABSTRACT Ravi Salavarty Aswinda: THE EFFECTIVENESS OF TEACHING READING COMPREHENSION USING SQ3R TO THE TENTH GRADE STUDENT AT SMK KARTANEGARA KEDIRI IN ACADEMIC YEAR 2015/2016,Skripsi, English Department Faculty of Teacher Training and Education University of Nusantara PGRI Kediri, Januari, 2016. Teaching reading comprehension is empowering people with the tools for learning. More than anything else, reading comprehension skills come in handy in the real world. Understanding the written word opens up portals to the vast stores of knowledge acquired by humans as a society, over centuries. Many good readers are not good at teaching reading skills. Knowing a skill and teaching that skill to someone are two different things. Therefore,this research aims at answering the following questions; (1) . How is the students reading comprehension before being taught using SQ3R at the tenth grade student of SMK Kartanegara in academic year grade of SMK Kartanegara in academic year 2015? (2) . How is the students reading comprehension after being taught using task based SQ3R at the tenth grade of SMK Kartanegara in academic year 2015/2016? .There are many factors which influence the success of SQ3R learning reading skill. One of them is learning strategies employed by a student. This research investigated learning strategies SQ3R in reading comprehension applied by a vocational student of SMK Kartanegara Kediri. It aimed at identifying what strategy applied by the student and how the student applied that learning strategies SQ3R in learning reading.This research was carried out in SMK Kartanegara Kediri in Academic Year 2014/2015. The researcher chose one male student on first year class of SMK Kartanegara Kediri who fulfilled the criterias of a successful learner, especially in reading. This research is a case study and use quantitative approach. Two main instruments were employed to collect data; observation and interview.There are three points that can be discovered from this research. 1) Vocabulary and are aspect that the student learn when read the text or listen new words 2) Preparing note book and dictionary, checking the progress, determine own strategy and focusing on the task are metacognitive strategies used by student 3) Listening music, wathcing, guessing the meaning, talk in front of mirror and note taking are cognitive strategies which are the most frequently used by student in speaking activity.Based on the findings above, the good learning strategy is when the student can develop speaking effectively.By knowing that Cognitive Strategy is the most frequent strategy used by student, the English teachers also can use teaching strategies that are appropriate with those strategies. The research design used is quantitative research. It describes the learning strategies in speaking applied by a student at tenth grade of SMK Kertanegara. The subject of this research is one male student at tenth grade of SMK Kertanegarawho has ability in speaking. To collect data in this research, the researcher were observ and interview. The subject in analyzing the data, the researcher used data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing or verification. Key words:Reading, survey, question ,read, recive,review
