Abstract

ABSTRACT Asri Agustina Sri Wulandari Fajriyah: Teacher’s Strategies in Material Development of Reading Comprehension Class of Eleventh Grade Science Department of SMA Negeri 1 Ngronggot. Skripsi, English Department, The Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, University of Nusantara PGRI Kediri 2015. Key words: Teaching Reading, Reading Comprehension, Teaching Strategy on Reading Comprehension. Reading is one of four basic skills in English competence. Reading is taught to the students by teacher in classroom. It is very important for Senior High School. The aim of reading is to understand the idea of text that it is read by students. In classroom, teacher teaches reading comprehension about how to read and understand the text where there is an idea, content, vocabulary, and language correctly. The problems of research are 1) To develop the materials in teaching reading comprehension to the eleventh grade science department of SMA Negeri 1 Ngronggot and to describe the steps of the teacher in teaching reading comprehension to the eleventh grade science department of SMA Negeri 1 Ngronggot. This research used descriptive qualitative research. The subject of the research was the eleventh grade science department’s teacher of SMA Negeri 1 Ngronggot. The data were gained through observation, interview and documentation to the teacher. The technique of analyzing data was used reducing the data, displaying the data and make the conclusion. The findings show that the teacher developed the materials for teaching reading by selection, adoption and adaptation, and creation. In material development, teacher selected the material based standard competence and basic competence. To adoption and adaptation, teacher use textbook as source before present the material to the students. Teacher did creation through create own question, give picture and leading question. The English teacher taught reading comprehension. The steps were started; first, the teacher gave interesting topic with picture until giving feedback after reading task. Based on the result of the research, it can be conclude that teacher developed the material though selection adoption and adaptation, and creation based on standard competence and basic competence. Teacher also used textbook as source of the material. And the writer suggest 1) English teacher at Senior High School should be able to formulate the learning objective correctly, select appropriate textbook and provide other textbook as supporting source not only one for students. 2) For the other researchers, this research will be input and reference for the writers in their research about teacher’s strategies in material development for reading comprehension for Senior High School students.
